Celebrating 100 Episodes: Books That Shaped Us

In Episode 101 of the Good Scribes Only Podcast, hosts Daniel Breyer and Jeremy Streich celebrate an incredible milestone—100 episodes of literary deep dives, witty banter, and unfiltered book discussions. To mark the occasion, they highlight the people behind the scenes who have made the podcast possible.

This special episode features reflections from the Good Scribes Only team as they share the books that left a lasting impact on them. From cult classics to historical epics, these are the stories that shaped their reading lives.

Reflections from the Team

1. Mike Cahill – Filth by Irvine Welsh

Mike, who runs marketing for Good Scribes Only, shares how Irvine Welsh’s Filth left a lasting impression on him. The novel’s dark humor, unreliable narration, and grotesque protagonist captivated him so much that it made him question whether he could ever write something as powerful.

“There are books you finish and immediately need a break because nothing else will compare. Filth was that book for me.”

He also reflects on Welsh’s creative use of a tapeworm as a narrator—a bizarre yet genius literary device that solidified the book’s place in his memory.

2. Jenny – Dispara, Yo Ya Estoy Muerto by Julia Navarro

Jenny, a longtime supporter of the podcast, brings a historical fiction recommendation that explores the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the intertwined lives of Arab and Jewish families.

“It’s a deeply nuanced look at a complicated issue, written with sensitivity and historical depth.”

This book, she emphasizes, offers a rare perspective—one that makes readers confront difficult histories while appreciating the human stories at the heart of political conflict.

3. Cal Turnbull – Rabbits by Terry Miles & The Captain Class by Sam Walker

As an audio engineer, Cal spends countless hours fine-tuning the podcast, but he still finds time for great books.

  • Rabbits by Terry Miles is a thrilling story about a secret, high-stakes game hidden within the real world. Cal describes it as part scavenger hunt, part mind-bending conspiracy thriller.
  • The Captain Class by Sam Walker explores what makes a great sports team captain. Unlike traditional leadership books, it focuses on lesser-known, intangible qualities that drive team success.

“The best captains weren’t always the star players, but they were the glue that held everything together.”

A Moment of Gratitude

Daniel and Jeremy take time to express their appreciation for the entire Good Scribes Only team—Jenny, Mary, Cal, Michael, and Alex—who have played a crucial role in shaping the podcast into what it is today.

“We couldn’t have done this without you,” Daniel says. “And we definitely wouldn’t have made it this far without our listeners.”

Jeremy adds:

“Here’s to 100 more episodes. Send us your book recommendations, and we’ll see you on the next chapter of this journey.”
